In Michael's Words

Why I'm Running

For Responsibility and Accountability. In his own words — why Michael is running, what he will do in his first 90 days, and the plan he will put to work for Wayne County.

For Responsibility & Accountability

Why am I running? Out of my 60+ years, no one ever told me Seven Mile was going to be raggedy, Wayne County parks were going to be dirty, Highland Park and Woodward not having trash picked up, lights not working, schools closing in the City of Detroit, SEMCA doesn't want to run inside the City of Detroit, nurses leaving the school system. Not one politician promised us suffering. They promised us things that we don't have. Well now, I'm saying, the jig is up!

The First 90 Days

My First Line of Duty

The commitments Michael will act on first as Wayne County Executive.

  1. 01

    Property Tax Amnesty

The first thing that I'm going to do when I get into office is enact a tax amnesty on property taxes. Whatever you owe — minus interest with NO penalties! I know it is not fair to take someone's house for less than the value of the house, and I will bring on the best attorneys to fight on behalf of the people.
  2. 02

    Protecting Our Seniors

Our senior citizens are my next priority — there is no way in the world I'm going to allow our seniors to age and have all of their life savings taken away while they are placed in senior care and memory care facilities. I will lead the charge for a task force to go into these facilities every 30 days to ensure our seniors are being cared for with love and dignity.
  3. 03

    Caring for the Unhoused

For our unhoused populations — I am not going to allow a facility for our unhoused community members to continue to collect million-dollar contracts just to deny persons in need of food and shelter; being turned away and told that "we're full" when they are not. I will lead the charge for a task force to check these facilities every 30 days to ensure that our unhoused men, women, and children are being properly cared for, then transitioned to stable housing as quickly as possible.
  4. 04

    Building for Our Youth

All of the vacant lots that the County owns — the County will go into partnership with local athletes, our business community, and organizations, to build out domes and centers for our youth to go to. We have all this land — let's build safe, fun, nice, useful facilities for our youth that we can all be proud of.

The Platform

Running Wayne County Like the Business It Is

A fair, transparent, and accountable approach to the work of county government.

Fiduciary Responsibility and Accountability

  • Under my lead, our Wayne County administration will run the County like the business that it is.
  • We will transform the way the County partners with external stakeholders into a fair and transparent process.
  • Licensed and insured contractors that seek to partner and work with the County should not be denied due to bureaucratic red tape and other underhanded exclusionary tactics.
  • We will completely revamp the current bonding process. The County will issue bonds to licensed and insured contractors, because the County can hold the bond at a lesser expense with more thorough and detailed oversight.

Vacant Properties

  • Under my leadership, Wayne County will eliminate blight through sound business practices.
  • We will work closely with local investors to develop vacant land into commercial strips of land and residential properties.
  • Instead of giving in to large, national and global investors that generate millions of dollars in revenue from the communities where we actually live and work, we will provide these opportunities to local investors.
  • Investing locally builds the County socioeconomically — providing opportunities to local communities and residents for increased jobs and empowering local workforces.

Property Taxes

  • As Wayne County Executive, our administration will completely transform the current process of home foreclosure due to delinquent property taxes.
  • Currently, when homes are foreclosed for taxes, the City sells the tax bill to the County.
  • Under my leadership, when the County pays this bill, the County will charge it back to the homeowner, penalty free, to be paid back over a period of five years.
  • In this manner, the homeowner is set up for success — able to remain in their home and provided a fair and just system to retain ownership of their home.

Mental Health

  • Too often, within predominantly marginalized communities, we are forced to rely on others to care for our loved ones; particularly as it relates to instances of mental health and wellness.
  • Under my leadership as Wayne County Executive, we will provide access and resources to opportunities for business and community development that have for too long been historically gatekept, in running mental health facilities.
  • While other populations are able to secure and maintain highly profitable contracts to establish, run, and grow mental health facilities and centers, the people living within our communities have been denied these opportunities for far too long.
  • We will eliminate these unfair business practices and provide our communities the same opportunities to take care of our communities, neighborhoods, and neighbors.

County Parks

  • As Wayne County Executive, I will make it a priority to ensure all of our County's parks are beautiful, welcoming, safe, updated, and family friendly for all of our residents.
  • Currently, only select parks receive the sweat equity and investment of time and dollars necessary for upkeep.
  • Under my leadership, we will ensure that all of our parks receive equitable treatment for all communities to enjoy.
